Trump Suffers Midterm Setback as Democrats Take Senate
Democrats have taken control of the United States Senate following a series of historic victories in the 2026 midterm elections, dealing a major political setback to President Donald Trump.

The Associated Press confirmed that the party secured 51 Senate seats, reaching the minimum required to control the upper chamber of Congress.
Democratic victories in Texas, Iowa, Kansas and South Carolina helped deliver the breakthrough, with several other closely contested races also favouring the party.
The Democrats are equally making significant gains in the House of Representatives, where they are edging closer to securing a majority.
The results represent a major rejection of Trump’s political agenda, with Republican candidates losing several important contests across the country.
Among the notable victories, James Talarico defeated his Republican opponent in Texas, while Sherrod Brown reclaimed Ohio’s Senate seat for the Democrats.
In Iowa, Josh Turek secured a Senate victory, while Adam Hamilton ended a nearly century-long Democratic absence from the state’s Senate representation in Kansas.
Democrats also recorded significant gubernatorial victories. Gina Hinojosa made history as Texas’s first Latina governor-elect, while David Crowley became Wisconsin’s first Black governor.
In Ohio, Amy Acton defeated Republican challenger Vivek Ramaswamy in the gubernatorial contest.
New Mexico also witnessed a historic development as Deb Haaland emerged victorious, becoming the state’s first female Native American governor.
Meanwhile, Democratic victories in New Hampshire extended beyond congressional representation, with the party securing both House seats, the state’s open Senate seat and control of both chambers of its legislature.
The results generated excitement among Democratic supporters, particularly progressive campaigners who had gathered in Dover, New Hampshire, to monitor the election.
One supporter reportedly announced, “Texas went blue!” as news of Democratic victories spread through the gathering.
New Hampshire also recorded impressive voter turnout, with the state’s secretary of state describing the electoral process as smooth.
The Democratic sweep surprised several party supporters, who had anticipated closely contested races, particularly in the state’s federal elections.
Their victories also reflected growing voter dissatisfaction with Republican policies, including legislation concerning LGBTQ rights.
Campaign efforts highlighting Republican Senate candidate John Sununu’s alleged connections to Jeffrey Epstein also became a talking point.
Sununu has denied the allegations, although Democratic campaigners used the issue to challenge his political credibility.
At some polling locations, voters who identified themselves as Republicans reportedly said they had chosen Democratic candidates instead.
The political shift has raised questions about the future of Republican control and the implications for Trump’s remaining time in office.

Although the Senate outcome is now established, the battle for the House remains closely watched as further results emerge.
