EFCC Uncovers Suspected Chinese-Run Illegal Oil Refinery in Ogun
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has uncovered a suspected illegal oil refinery linked to Chinese nationals in Ogere, Ogun State.
The discovery followed an intelligence-led operation carried out on Saturday, October 31, 2026, by operatives of the commission’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Tuesday, explaining that the operation targeted illegal sludge oil refining activities.

According to the commission, operatives found the facility abandoned upon arrival, following an earlier operation that shut down four illegal lithium processing plants nearby.
However, investigators discovered refining waste and underground storage tanks suspected to have been used in heating and processing sludge oil.
The commission also reported that two underground tanks contained substances suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel.
Preliminary findings indicated that the operators transported black sludge from Warri, Delta State, and Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to the Ogun facility.
Investigators believe the operators subjected the material to intense heat, separating lighter petroleum components through chambers and filters to produce diesel.
The suspected product was allegedly intended for sale within the Nigerian petroleum market.
Oyewale further revealed that workers at the facility could not identify the Chinese operators or provide the name of the company behind the business.
He said the workers informed investigators that the operators had deliberately withheld their identities and company details.
The EFCC has consequently taken control of the premises while investigations continue to uncover the identities of those involved.
The commission is also working to establish the facility’s ownership, the extent of its operations and possible economic sabotage.
The latest discovery adds to the EFCC’s enforcement activities in Ogere, where four illegal lithium processing facilities were previously shut down.
