Bauchi Police Arrest Suspects Over Children’s Deaths
The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested two suspects following the deaths of children in separate incidents reported in Alkaleri and Ganjuwa Local Government Areas.
Police spokesperson Nafiu Habib confirmed the arrests in a statement on Monday, explaining that the cases involved a boy and a five-year-old girl.
The first incident occurred on October 16, 2026, in Kwaimawa village, where a 23-year-old woman, identified as Fatima Ibrahim, allegedly gave her stepson a beverage.
According to the police, the boy began vomiting severely after drinking the beverage and was taken to a Primary Health Care Centre in Kwaimawa before being transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe for further treatment.
Despite receiving medical attention, the child died on October 24 after battling for his life for eight days.
Habib said detectives launched an investigation following a complaint from the village head of Kwaimawa, leading to Ibrahim’s arrest. The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
In a separate case, a five-year-old girl was discovered dead inside a water pit in Badaromo village after she was reported missing by her grandfather.
The police said the grandfather reported the girl missing at about 7 pm on October 23, prompting residents to search the community for her whereabouts.
The search ended the following morning when her body was found in a small water pit behind the village at approximately 7 am on October 24.
Police operatives attached to the Soro Division subsequently arrested a 19-year-old suspect, identified as Sadiku Musa, in connection with the girl’s death.
The command said both cases had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for detailed investigation.
Bauchi State Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu expressed sadness over the deaths, describing the incidents as heartbreaking and inhumane.
He assured the bereaved families that the police would work to ensure justice for the deceased children, identified as Habiba and Mubarak.
The commissioner also extended his condolences to the affected families and called on parents, guardians and community leaders to strengthen efforts to protect children from harm.
