Nollywood, Clerics, and Political Figures Gather in Lagos for Emotional Tribute to Late Alex Ekubo
Lagos came to a standstill on Wednesday, June 10, as family, friends, and some of Nigeria’s biggest names in entertainment, politics, and the church gathered for the service of songs in honour of the late actor Alex Ekubo.
The solemn event was held at the Monarch Event Centre in the Lekki area of Lagos State and drew a large turnout of mourners who came to pay their final respects to the Nollywood star, whose passing has continued to send shockwaves through the entertainment industry.
Among those present were veteran actress Funke Akindele, Ini Edo, Kate Henshaw, Omoni Oboli, Nancy Isime, Ruth Kadiri, and other top Nollywood figures, alongside actors such as Stan Nze, Kunle Remi, Mike Godson, and comedian AY.
The event also attracted notable public figures, including former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili, as well as media personalities like Frank Edoho.
Religious leaders played a central role in the ceremony, with Pastor Ituah Ighodalo and Pastor Jerry Eze ministering, supported by gospel artistes including Moses Bliss, Mercy Chinwo, Peterson Okopi, Ebuka Songs, and the Laud Urban Choir, who led worship sessions in a deeply emotional atmosphere.
Alex Ekubo reportedly passed away on May 11, 2026, at a Lagos hospital after battling advanced kidney cancer.
His death has left a significant void in Nollywood, where he was widely celebrated for his talent and screen presence.
He is scheduled to be laid to rest in his hometown, Ujari Village in Abia State, on June 18, 2026, where family, colleagues, and fans are expected to gather for his final farewell.
The service of songs reflected both grief and celebration of a career that left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s film industry.
