What Really Led to Social Media Commentator Ibrahim Dan Shagamu’s Killing?
More questions than answers surround the killing of social media commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, who was attacked inside his Kano home in the early hours of Wednesday.
The 54-year-old was reportedly killed by unidentified men who broke into his residence in Ja’en Yamma B before fleeing the area.
He was later buried amid grief from his six children, relatives and members of the community who are still struggling to understand what happened.
Dan Shagamu was known for his outspoken social media videos, where he regularly commented on political, religious and social issues.
His commentaries were often direct and sometimes critical of politicians, traditional rulers, religious groups and people within his neighbourhood.
That history has now raised questions about whether his public activities had any connection with his death.
However, the motive for the killing has not been established.
While some residents suspect the attack could have resulted from local disputes or actions by people with political interests, others have pointed to his social media activities.
The police, however, have not confirmed any link between his online commentaries and the killing.
A resident who spoke to Weekend Trust on condition of anonymity said there were aspects of Dan Shagamu’s life that had raised questions within the community.
The source described him as outspoken online but relatively reserved in his everyday dealings with people.
The resident also alleged that Dan Shagamu had previously complained about threats to his life without identifying those responsible.
He said such claims had contributed to suspicion around the deceased, although no evidence had emerged publicly to establish who may have threatened him.
The source further claimed that Dan Shagamu had an unusual relationship with some children in the neighbourhood, a claim that was not substantiated.
According to the resident, Dan Shagamu had lived alone after his divorce and had asked his six children to stay with their grandparents because of concerns over their safety.
That decision meant he was alone when the attackers entered his home.
His sister, Aisha Muhammad Lawal, however, rejected suggestions that her brother had done anything that could explain his killing.
“We don’t know anything bad about him or what could have led to the assassination. That is why we are calling on the relevant authorities to ensure justice is served,” she said.
What the community knew
The Ward Head of Ja’en Yamma B, Abdullahi Suleiman Muhammad, said Dan Shagamu had lived in the community for some time but was not particularly close to many residents.
Muhammad said the deceased often recorded videos claiming that neighbours or religious groups wanted to harm him.
He added that Dan Shagamu rarely provided names when asked to identify the people he believed were behind the alleged threats.
The ward head recalled one disagreement between the deceased and a child who had approached him for alms.
According to him, Dan Shagamu refused to give the child money, after which the child insulted him and a disagreement followed.
Community members intervened and settled the matter.
Muhammad said that incident was one of the occasions that brought him into direct contact with the deceased.
He also recalled Dan Shagamu making claims that a member of a religious group wanted him dead.
According to the ward head, such allegations were not accompanied by evidence.
He nevertheless stressed that there was no evidence showing that members of the community were responsible for Dan Shagamu’s death.
Muhammad said vigilante operatives alerted him after discovering that the deceased’s house had been broken into.
“When the police came and entered the house, they found that he had been slaughtered,” he said.
The body was subsequently taken to hospital before being returned to the family for burial the following morning.
Muhammad urged landlords and residents to introduce new tenants to community leaders, saying greater knowledge of people living within neighbourhoods could help prevent conflicts.
He prayed for the deceased and appealed to residents to continue embracing peace.
His children want justice
For Dan Shagamu’s children, the circumstances surrounding their father’s death matter less than finding those responsible.
The family has appealed to the Kano State Government and the police to investigate the killing and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
His eldest son, Muhammad Ibrahim, said he was at his grandparents’ home when the incident occurred.
He said he initially received information that his father was unwell before discovering the devastating truth.
“I didn’t know what had happened until in the morning when I was told he was unwell. When I arrived, they tried to shield me, so I wouldn’t be distressed,” he said.
Muhammad urged the authorities to investigate the killing thoroughly.
He described the manner of his father’s death as unacceptable and appealed for those responsible to be brought before the law.
His sister, Ummusalma Ibrahim, said the family remained deeply hurt by the loss.
“We feel very sad, but our plea is that those who committed this act should be investigated and brought to book,” she said.
Another son, Awwal Ibrahim, said the family had accepted the death as God’s will but would not abandon its demand for justice.
“May Allah have mercy on him and forgive him. We want the authorities to make every effort to find those who committed this terrible act,” he said.
The family disclosed that Dan Shagamu had previously been involved in political disagreements with prominent figures.
They said concerns over his safety had also influenced his decision to have his children stay with their mother.
Dan Shagamu, who had worked in marketing at two radio stations in Kano, was also reportedly involved in filmmaking as a writer in the Kannywood industry.
He left behind six children.
Police investigation continues
The circumstances surrounding the killing are now the subject of a police investigation.
The Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, could not be reached for further comments when contacted.
However, he had earlier confirmed that two people had been arrested in connection with the case.
Kiyawa said investigations were continuing and that the police would arrest other suspects where necessary before charging them to court.
He also indicated that preliminary findings did not suggest that Dan Shagamu’s death was connected to his social media activities.
That leaves the central question unanswered.
Was his killing linked to a personal dispute, his political disagreements, his online commentaries or something else entirely?
For now, none of those possibilities has been established.
What is known is that Dan Shagamu was killed inside his own home, and the people responsible remain at the centre of an investigation that his family hopes will finally provide the answers they are seeking.
