UK Opens Applications for Fully Funded Chevening Scholarships

The United Kingdom has officially opened applications for the 2026/2027 Chevening Scholarships, giving qualified candidates the opportunity to compete for fully funded master’s degree programmes at universities across the UK.

Applications opened on Tuesday, August 4, and will remain open until October 6, 2026.

Backed by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) in partnership with other organisations, the Chevening Scholarship supports outstanding professionals and emerging leaders to pursue a one-year postgraduate degree while building leadership skills and expanding their international networks.

Since its launch in 1983, the programme has produced thousands of alumni from around the world, many of whom now occupy leadership positions in government, business, civil society and other sectors.

Announcing the opening of this year’s application window, Head of the Scholarships Unit at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Emma Hennessey, encouraged eligible candidates to take advantage of the opportunity.

“Chevening is looking for exceptional individuals who are ready to collaborate with the UK to help build a more resilient, prosperous and sustainable future,” she said.

Hennessey noted that the scholarship places strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from talented individuals whose backgrounds are often under-represented.

She explained that successful candidates are chosen not only for their academic excellence and professional accomplishments but also for their leadership qualities and their determination to create positive change in their communities.

According to her, the programme offers much more than financial support, providing scholars with access to world-class education, international networks and experiences that prepare them to address shared global challenges.

British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, described Chevening as a life-changing opportunity that extends well beyond the classroom.

He said scholars benefit from exposure to UK culture and values while building lifelong relationships with a global network of professionals and leaders.

Baxter encouraged Nigerians with a clear vision for creating meaningful change and strengthening areas of shared interest between Nigeria and the United Kingdom to submit their applications.

Interested candidates are expected to complete their applications through the official Chevening portal before the October 6 deadline and carefully follow the programme’s application guidelines.
