“Our Women Who Organized A Campaign in Sokoto Were Beaten up, Our Candidate Was Harassed”– Ologbondiyan
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, has alleged that some women who organised a campaign for the party in Sokoto State were beaten up, while the party’s governorship candidate was also harassed and physically attacked.
During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Ologbondiyan made the allegations while discussing the challenges facing the party as it prepares for the 2027 general election.
He said the political environment in Sokoto had become difficult for opposition parties, claiming that ADC supporters had encountered incidents of violence while carrying out campaign activities in the state.
“Our women who organised a campaign in Sokoto were beaten up,” Ologbondiyan said, describing an incident he claimed occurred within the week before the interview.
The ADC spokesman said the incident involving the women was one of the developments that informed his concerns about the party’s ability to campaign freely.
He argued that political activities should not expose party supporters to violence or intimidation.
Ologbondiyan also alleged that the party’s governorship candidate was attacked after accompanying political figures, including a former Speaker and a former governor, to the airport. He said the candidate encountered trouble while returning from the airport.
“Our candidate was harassed, his vehicle was damaged, and people beat him,” he said while recounting what he alleged happened to the ADC governorship candidate.
He described the reported incidents as evidence of what he called a stifled political environment in Sokoto.
According to him, the experiences of the party’s women and governorship candidate had raised concerns about the treatment of opposition supporters during the campaign period.
Despite the allegations, Ologbondiyan maintained that the ADC would not abandon its campaign activities. He said the party’s presidential candidate was prepared to visit all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, adding that the campaign had already commenced.
He also insisted that the party would continue its political activities despite the difficulties it claimed to be facing.
