Over 46,000 Displaced as Yemen Fighting Intensifies

More than 46,000 people have been forced from their homes in Yemen following a fresh escalation of fighting between Houthi rebels and government forces, according to the United Nations. The International Organisation for Migration warned that the number is rising “by the hour” as families flee areas affected by the violence.

The crisis worsened after Houthi forces captured the strategic Red Sea port city of Mocha, prompting residents to abandon homes and villages with little more than their belongings. The UN has urged all sides to protect civilians, aid workers and humanitarian facilities while allowing safe and unrestricted access for relief operations.

Humanitarian experts warn that the latest fighting could deepen Yemen’s already severe crisis, trigger further displacement and push up the prices of essential goods. The developments have also raised concerns over increased instability along the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a vital international maritime corridor.
