NUSA seeks justice over death of 34-year-old Nigerian in Johannesburg

The Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) has demanded an immediate and transparent investigation into the death of a 34-year-old Nigerian, Mr Christian Hilary Nnaemeka, in Johannesburg.

NUSA made the demand in a statement signed by George O. Sylvester, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to its President-General.

According to the union, Nnaemeka died following an alleged attack reportedly involving Xolani Khumalo and members of his Sizokthola crew.

It said the incident allegedly occurred at about 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, around Willow and Filbert Streets, Primrose, Johannesburg.

NUSA said Nnaemeka, who hailed from Enugu-Ezike, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, was married and had a three-year-old son.

The union expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding his death and called for an independent investigation to establish what happened.

“We demand that every person connected to this incident be identified and properly investigated.

“If anyone is found to have acted unlawfully, that person must face the full weight of the law, regardless of position, influence or affiliation,” it said.

NUSA also demanded answers on the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the reported attack formed part of an authorised operation.

It asked the authorities to explain what happened to Nnaemeka, why he was allegedly attacked, who was responsible and the steps being taken to ensure justice.

The union said it would engage relevant South African authorities and work with the Nigerian Mission, particularly the Consul-General’s Office and the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, on the matter.

It urged the Nigerian Mission to continue engaging South African authorities and utilise available diplomatic channels to ensure the safety and protection of Nigerians living in the country.

NUSA said it supported lawful efforts to combat crime and drugs but stressed that allegations should be investigated through due process.

“No allegation of criminality should become a licence to take a human life,” it said.

The union said although Nnaemeka could not be brought back, establishing the truth surrounding his death and ensuring justice would be important for his family and the Nigerian community.

It said the three-year-old son of the deceased had lost his father and called for accountability in the handling of the case.

NUSA said it would continue to pursue answers concerning the circumstances of Nnaemeka’s death.

“We demand answers.
“We demand accountability.
“We demand justice.
“For Christian Hilary Nnaemeka.
“For his family.
“And for every Nigerian living in South Africa,” the union said.
