Nigeria Flamingos Makes History as They Win 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco
The Nigerian U-17 women’s national football team, affectionately known as the Flamingos, etched their names into eternity by capturing the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco. In a thrilling, high-stakes final against a formidable Japanese side, the West African prodigies showcased masterclass resilience and tactical brilliance to seal a historic 2-1 victory. This landmark triumph sent shockwaves of celebration across the African continent, signaling a paradigm shift in the landscape of global women’s youth football.
Nigeria’s path to glory was defined by a stunning offensive display that broke Japanese defenses early in each half. Star forward Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a clinical finish, sending the Nigerian supporters into raptures before halftime. Immediately after the restart, Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead in the 47th minute with a sensational strike that ultimately proved to be the match-winner. Despite a late scare from Japan’s Fuki Ito, who converted an 80th-minute consolation goal, the disciplined Flamingos held their lines firmly until the final whistle blew.
With this victory, the Flamingos secured multiple monumental milestones that will forever define their legacy. Nigeria has officially become the first African nation in history to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, shattering a long-standing glass ceiling for the continent. Furthermore, this victory establishes Nigeria as the first country in the world to claim the FIFA U-17 World Cup title at both the men’s (Golden Eaglets) and women’s levels. What makes this championship even more remarkable is the team’s mental fortitude; after stumbling in their opening group-stage match in a 2-1 defeat against Poland, the Flamingos rattled off six consecutive victories to lift the ultimate prize.
The tournament’s individual accolades heavily reflected Nigeria’s championship dominance and the outstanding quality of the competition.
Nigeria’s match-winner, Oluebube Umejiaku, was rightfully awarded the prestigious Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player, capping off an unforgettable individual campaign. The Silver and Bronze Balls went to DPR Korea’s Yu Jong-hyang and Japan’s Fuki Ito respectively, acknowledging their masterclasses in midfield and attack. Japan was also recognized with the FIFA Fair Play Trophy for their exemplary discipline and sportsmanship on the pitch throughout the competition in Morocco.
The Golden Glove for the tournament’s best goalkeeper went to DPR Korea’s exceptional shot-stopper, Kim Son-gyong, who anchored her team to a bronze medal finish.
Meanwhile, the goal-scoring charts witnessed a piece of absolute history of their own, dominated by the United States’ sensational forward Maddie DiMaria. Despite the USA bowing out in the quarter-finals, DiMaria smashed the tournament record to win the Golden Boot with an astonishing 12 goals, closely followed by DPR Korea’s Yu Jong-hyang (Silver Boot) and Ri Ui-gyong (Bronze Boot). Ultimately, the 2026 edition will be remembered as the tournament where African women’s football conquered the world, led by the unstoppable Flamingos.
