Just Hours After Shooting Down US Drone, Iran Hit By Mysterious Explosions
Tensions escalated in the Middle East after explosions were reported in southern Iran.
Two explosions rocked Iran’s Kish Island on November 7, with Iranian media reporting a possible missile strike, further escalating tensions around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
The explosions came just hours after Iran claimed it shot down a US military drone, MQ-1, over Kish.
Iran said the interception brings the number of US MQ-1 drones destroyed to 16.
Iran’s state broadcaster IRNA reported two blasts near the Souza area of the island.
The semi-official Tasnim news agency reported initial indications of two missiles hitting the island.
There are no reports of casualties so far, and Tehran has not officially confirmed a missile attack.
IRNA had earlier reported that local witnesses said the blasts occurred after the sound of an aircraft was heard over the island.
In a statement, the Iranian Army said its air defence force intercepted and destroyed the American aircraft using newly developed air defence systems operating within the country’s unified air defence network.
Why Kish Matters
Located near the Strait of Hormuz, Kish occupies a critical position along one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy maintains a presence in the surrounding waters, while reports have also identified naval facilities and underground missile installations on the island. That makes Kish a strategically important location for Iran’s coastal defence and maritime surveillance.
US Response Awaited
Meanwhile, responding to reports of explosions in Kish, a US Central Command official told Al Jazeera that the situation around the island remains relatively calm.
The official indicated that the US military command will issue an announcement concerning Iran at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time. What that announcement will contain remains unclear, and the official declined to disclose any details.
With explosions now being reported alongside Tehran’s claim of another American drone shootdown, attention is firmly shifting to this critical stretch of the Gulf. What triggered the latest blasts remains unclear, and whether missiles were involved, what may have been targeted, and whether the incidents are connected are questions that remain unanswered.
