Abdul El-Sayed Makes US History as Michigan Elects First Muslim Senator
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has made history after winning Michigan’s closely contested Senate election, becoming the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate.
El-Sayed defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in Tuesday’s election, securing a crucial victory for Democrats, according to projections by American media organisations.
The former public health official contested the seat previously held by retiring Senator Gary Peters. His victory followed a difficult campaign that attracted national attention.
His religious background became a major issue during the race, with President Donald Trump and other Republican figures repeatedly questioning his Muslim faith.
However, El-Sayed rejected allegations attempting to associate his religious beliefs with extremism.
His victory carries additional political significance because Michigan was among the closely contested states in the 2024 presidential election, which Trump narrowly won.

The historic result means El-Sayed will take his seat in the US Senate when the new Congress begins in January 2027.
