US Weighs Military Action in Mali as Jihadist Violence Spreads Across the Sahel
The United States is considering possible military action against an al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group operating in Mali as growing terrorist attacks continue to destabilise the Sahel region.
According to The Washington Post, Washington is examining options to weaken Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, widely known as JNIM, one of the most powerful militant groups operating in West Africa.
The group has its strongest presence in Mali but has also expanded its activities into Burkina Faso and southwestern Niger.
Its influence has reportedly reached Nigeria, where militants linked to the group have been connected to attacks in Kwara State.
Mali has struggled to contain the growing insurgency. The security crisis has become even more complicated after JNIM joined forces with the Azawad Liberation Front, a Tuareg-led separatist movement.
The alliance has intensified attacks across northern Mali, resulting in hundreds of deaths in recent months.
A coordinated ambush on a military convoy last weekend reportedly killed more than 50 Malian soldiers and allied Russian fighters. Several others were reportedly forced to flee, with some later taken to undisclosed locations.
The attack took place along the road between Anefis and Gao and marked the second major offensive against Mali’s military in recent months.
The country was also shaken in April after coordinated attacks struck several locations, including an airport in Bamako.
Defence Minister Sadio Camara was also assassinated during the period of escalating violence.
The African Union has condemned the attacks in Mali and Niger, calling for stronger cooperation among countries in the region.
It urged governments to improve intelligence-sharing, strengthen border security, coordinate military operations more effectively and disrupt the criminal networks and terrorist financing systems that continue to sustain armed groups in the Sahel.
Speaking recently in Washington, Nick Checker, a senior official in the US African Bureau, said the United States remained concerned about the resurgence of jihadist violence in the region.
However, he stressed that any American involvement would not necessarily signal a return to the kind of long-term military presence the United States previously maintained in parts of Africa.
According to Checker, Washington’s engagement with Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso is focused on supporting regional leadership and encouraging cooperation in confronting the persistent threat posed by terrorist groups operating across national borders.
The growing crisis now places the United States before a difficult question: how far should it go in confronting jihadist groups in the Sahel without becoming permanently drawn into another long-running military conflict?
