Argentina’s Celebrations Take Unexpected Turn as FIFA Eyes Possible Sanctions
Argentina’s place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final has been overshadowed by the possibility of disciplinary action after players displayed a politically sensitive banner during their post-match celebrations following Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over England.

The defending champions completed a dramatic comeback in Atlanta after Anthony Gordon had given England the lead in the 55th minute.
Argentina responded late through Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez, with Lionel Messi providing the assists for both goals to send his side into Sunday’s final against Spain.
However, attention quickly shifted away from the result after several Argentina players posed with a banner reading, “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falkland Islands are Argentine”).

The slogan refers to the long-standing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas.
The disagreement led to the 1982 Falklands War, in which hundreds of British and Argentine military personnel lost their lives.
FIFA regulations prohibit political, religious and ideological messages at competitions organised by the governing body.
The banner has therefore sparked speculation that Argentina could face disciplinary proceedings over the post-match display.

Despite the controversy, Argentina remain focused on defending their World Cup title when they face Spain in the final on Sunday.
