Fernandes Hat-Trick Leads Man United to 5-2 Win Over Ipswich
Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from an early setback to defeat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Ipswich stunned the home supporters in the 29th minute when Leif Davis put the visitors ahead after United’s defence was exposed.
Manchester United responded before half-time, with Fernandes firing a powerful left-footed effort past the Ipswich goalkeeper in the 40th minute.
The equaliser changed the direction of the match, and United returned from the break with far greater purpose.
Jacob Greaves put the hosts ahead in the 56th minute after turning the ball into his own net.
Fernandes then converted a penalty in the 61st minute before completing his hat-trick seven minutes later to give United a commanding 4-1 lead.
Bryan Mbeumo added another in the 82nd minute as Michael Carrick’s side took complete control of the contest.
Ipswich managed a late consolation through Chuba Akpom in stoppage time, but it was not enough to prevent United from claiming a convincing victory.
The result was an emphatic response to United’s disappointing 2-0 defeat by Hull, with Carrick’s decision to dismiss that loss as “just one game” receiving early validation.
Fernandes’ performance also continued his outstanding form from last season, when he claimed both major footballer of the year awards.
However, United’s defensive frailties remain a concern, with Ipswich creating opportunities and finding the net twice.
Carrick will be pleased with the attacking display, but United must tighten up at the back if they are to maintain this level against stronger opposition.
