Parents Face Murder Charges After Severely Obese 7-Year-Old Dies in Michigan
A Michigan couple has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of their seven-year-old son, whose extreme obesity and living conditions have shocked investigators.

Authorities in Genesee County said Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, are also facing charges of torture and multiple counts of second-degree child abuse after their son, Casper O’Brien, died in November 2025.
Emergency responders were called to the family’s Flint Township home after receiving reports that the child was struggling to breathe.
Paramedics found him unable to move and in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
An autopsy determined that Casper died from heart muscle disease, with morbid obesity identified as a significant contributing factor.
According to prosecutors, the seven-year-old weighed approximately 255 pounds at the time of his death.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton described the family’s home as one of the most disturbing scenes he has encountered during more than two decades in office.
Investigators reported the house was heavily cluttered, while another young child was allegedly found wandering inside unclothed.
Prosecutors allege the boy’s parents failed to provide basic care and allowed his health to deteriorate to a life-threatening level.
They also claim Casper was bedridden, had never attended school, and had received medical attention only once despite the family’s access to health insurance.
Officials further revealed that no local government agency—including child protective services, law enforcement, or the school district—appeared to have any record of the children before the emergency call.
The investigation reportedly began after the family’s landlord raised concerns about the deteriorating condition of the property and the parents’ reluctance to allow anyone inside.

Damien and Jessica O’Brien are expected to appear in court next week for a probable cause conference as the criminal case moves forward.
