FIFA Taps Colorado Farm to Grow World Cup Grass Indoors Without Sunlight

FIFA has selected Green Valley Sod in Platteville, Colorado, to help supply natural grass for three of the 16 stadium sites hosting the upcoming World Cup.
The project is part of a broader effort to ensure consistent, high-quality playing surfaces across all tournament venues in North America, where different climates and stadium designs make pitch conditions unpredictable.
At the Colorado facility, the grass is being grown in fully controlled indoor environments where it receives no direct sunlight. Instead, carefully engineered systems regulate artificial lighting, water, temperature, and nutrients to simulate ideal growing conditions.
The aim is to produce turf that is strong, uniform, and match-ready, capable of withstanding the demands of elite football at the highest level. Once matured, the grass will be harvested and transported to stadiums for installation ahead of matches.
The initiative reflects how modern sports preparation has evolved, with pitch production now treated as a precision science combining agriculture, technology, and engineering.
As the tournament approaches, the Colorado project stands out as a key example of how far organizers are going to ensure perfect playing conditions for every match, regardless of location or environment.
