Monday Night Football: European Heavyweights Deliver Goals and Drama
In the Premier League, reigning champions Arsenal F.C. secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory against Aston Villa F.C. at Villa Park.
A tight first half saw Villa come closest to breaking the deadlock when Emi Buendía struck the crossbar.
However, the decisive moment arrived in the 59th minute when Bukayo Saka bundled the ball in from close range. The win keeps Arsenal perfect with six points from their opening two matches, matching the pace of Manchester City.
Over in Serie A, AS Roma put on an offensive masterclass with a commanding 4–0 away win over U.S. Lecce.
The star of the night was new signing Donyell Malen, who continued his blistering start to the Italian campaign by netting a clinical brace.
In the other Monday fixture in Italy, Atalanta BC left it late to secure a 1–0 victory over Bologna FC 1909. A 96th-minute stoppage-time goal from Lazar Samardžić broke Bologna’s resilience and sealed all three points for the hosts.
La Liga action was highlighted by a high-scoring showcase at the Spotify Camp Nou, where FC Barcelona dominated Rayo Vallecano in a 5–2 thrill ride.
Rayo Vallecano’s Sergio Camello scored two impressive goals to keep the visitors fighting, but Barcelona’s firepower proved overwhelming.
Raphinha and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal each scored twice, while an unfortunate own goal by Florian Lejeune completed the five-goal haul for Hansi Flick’s side, keeping their perfect start to the season intact.
Earlier in the Spanish top flight, CA Osasuna managed a tight 1–0 home win against Getafe CF at the El Sadar Stadium.
The cagey affair was heavily defined by disciplinary problems, with both teams picking up a combined nine yellow cards.
Osasuna found the crucial breakthrough to claim the minimal advantage, successfully shutting down Getafe’s attacks to see out the narrow victory and wrap up an eventful night of European football.
