Trump Warns EU Over Proposed Canada Partnership
US President Donald Trump has warned that deeper ties between Canada and the European Union could trigger a strong response from Washington, including higher tariffs.
Trump made the comments after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen proposed that Canada become the bloc’s first “associate member”, with closer cooperation in areas including trade, defence, technology and energy.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is seeking to reduce Canada’s reliance on the United States, is due to address European lawmakers as discussions over the proposed partnership continue.
The EU has stressed that stronger relations with Canada are not aimed at any other country, while French European Affairs Minister Benjamin Haddad said Washington has no veto over the EU’s decisions.
