Kim Jong Un’s China Visit Signals More Than a Border Crossing
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong, travelling across the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported on Saturday, citing a government source. The visit comes about a week after the long-delayed bridge linking China and North Korea officially opened, potentially strengthening economic ties between the neighbouring countries.
According to Yonhap, Kim crossed the bridge earlier in the day. The four-lane structure was completed in 2014 but remained unopened for years because of delays involving connecting roads and customs facilities on the North Korean side. China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner and a key source of economic and diplomatic support.

Kim’s last known visit to China was in September 2025, when he attended the 80th Victory Day celebrations in Beijing and met Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi visited North Korea in June 2026, signalling improving relations between the two countries. However, no further details about Kim’s current visit were provided in the report.
