Nigeria Beat Zambia to Secure Crucial Group C Victory
Defending champions Nigeria revived their continental tournament campaign with a vital, hard-fought 1-0 victory over Zambia at the Al Madina Stadium.
Under immense pressure following a shock opening-day defeat, Justin Madugu’s Super Falcons displayed elite resilience to withstand a fierce, highly physical offensive onslaught.
This narrow, high-stakes triumph successfully secures three crucial points, keeping the ten-time African champions firmly in the hunt for a quarter-final spot.
The decisive moment of the match arrived in the eighth minute when star forward Asisat Oshoala ruthlessly capitalised on a Zambian defensive miscommunication.
Nigeria’s strategic game plan faced a severe setback in the 40th minute when centre-back Oluwatosin Demehin was shown a straight red card.
Despite playing more than half the encounter with a numerical disadvantage, the disciplined Nigerian backline dropped deep and successfully neutralized dangerous striker Barbra Banda.
This monumental result completely shakes up the Group C dynamic, leaving Nigeria and Zambia locked at three points each behind leaders Malawi.
The Copper Queens suffer a frustrating setback after their opening-day goal fest, while the Super Falcons successfully pull off an essential survival mission.
Both teams will now look forward to a highly anticipated, high-stakes final round of group fixtures to lock in their knockout phase places.
