Nigerian Flamingos Snatch Late Winner to Reach World Cup Semi-Finals
Nigeria’s Flamingos have reached the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after edging Venezuela 1-0 in Sunday’s quarter-final in Morocco. Azeezat Oduntan converted an 89th-minute penalty after Oluebube Umejiaku was fouled inside the box, sealing Nigeria’s fourth victory in regular time at a single edition of the tournament, a new record for the team.

The encounter remained goalless for most of the match, with goalkeeper Valeria Rebanales helping Venezuela resist Nigeria’s attacking pressure. However, Oduntan’s late spot-kick proved decisive as the Flamingos held on through eight minutes of added time to secure their second semi-final appearance, following their bronze-medal finish in 2022.

Nigeria will now face Brazil on Wednesday, November 4, with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Nigerian time at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, Pitch 3, in Rabat. Victory would take the Flamingos into the final as they continue their pursuit of a historic World Cup title.
