Kamala Harris Makes a Sensitive Move in Michigan Senate Race
Former US Vice President Kamala Harris has joined Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed on the campaign trail in Detroit as the Michigan Senate race moves towards the November midterm elections. Harris appeared with El-Sayed at a roundtable focused on Black maternal health and later backed his campaign at a Detroit NAACP event.
The appearance comes as El-Sayed works to bring together Democratic voters after defeating Congresswoman Haley Stevens in a closely fought August primary. His campaign is also seeking stronger support among Black voters in Wayne County, where he lost to Stevens during the primary.
El-Sayed will face Republican nominee Mike Rogers in November for the Senate seat being vacated by Democratic Senator Gary Peters. The campaign has also highlighted differences within the Democratic coalition, particularly over Israel and healthcare, as both sides prepare for the general election.
