Sokoto Governor Ahmed Aliyu Increases Corps Members’ Monthly Allowance to N20,000
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has increased the monthly allowance paid to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from N10,000 to N20,000. The new amount represents a 100 per cent increase in the state government’s financial support for corps members.
The governor also announced a cash gift of N30,000 for every corps member currently participating in the NYSC orientation exercise in the state.
He made the announcements on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch C Stream II corps members at the NYSC Temporary Orientation Camp, located at the College of Administration, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto.
Aliyu said the decision was part of his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of corps members and providing an enabling environment for them to carry out their national service.
He explained that the government recognised the contributions of young graduates to national development and would continue to support their activities.
In addition to the increase in monthly allowance and the cash gift, the governor approved the donation of a Toyota Hilux vehicle to the NYSC.
He said the vehicle would strengthen the scheme’s monitoring and supervision activities, particularly in areas with difficult terrain where officials might encounter challenges carrying out their responsibilities.
The governor also promised to provide five cows daily to feed corps members throughout the orientation exercise.
He further directed the management of the institution hosting the camp to urgently address the challenges affecting electricity and water supply to ensure that participants had access to essential facilities during the programme.
Governor Speaks on NYSC’s Role in National Unity
Speaking during the ceremony, Aliyu highlighted the contribution of the NYSC scheme to national integration and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians. He said, “The role of corps members in promoting national integration and unity cannot be overemphasised.”
The governor also disclosed that his administration had committed more than N1bn to the renovation and upgrading of the permanent NYSC orientation camp in Wamakko Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to him, the project had reached approximately 90 per cent completion, with the government working towards ensuring that the facility meets the needs of corps members.
Aliyu assured the newly deployed corps members that their security and welfare would remain important priorities for his administration. He also appealed to ministries, government agencies and other employers to accept corps members posted to their establishments rather than reject them.
To ensure that the newly approved increase in allowance is properly implemented, the governor announced that a committee would be established to oversee the process.
The committee is expected to ensure that corps members receive the approved benefits as directed by the state government.
NYSC Coordinator Commends Governor’s Support
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Tyoyer Gabriel Ter, commended Aliyu for his continued support for the scheme and efforts to improve the welfare of corps members serving in Sokoto State.
Ter stated that the governor’s consistent contributions to the NYSC had earned him recognition among officials of the scheme. He said, “Based on the governor’s consistent support for corps members in the state, he will soon be honoured as the best NYSC-friendly governor.”
The state coordinator also appreciated the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for his continued assistance to corps members, particularly his provision of bulls during orientation exercises and awards for the two best-performing corps members at every passing-out parade.
He further acknowledged the contributions of the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Man O’ War and other paramilitary organisations. He also recognised philanthropists who had supported the successful organisation of the orientation exercise.
The swearing-in ceremony concluded with the administration of the oath of allegiance to the newly deployed corps members by the Chief Judge of Sokoto State, Justice Muhammad Saidu Sifawa, who was represented by Justice Muhammad A. Sambo.
