Japan Increases Foreign Entry Visa Fees by 400%
Foreign travelers heading to Japan will soon face significantly higher visa costs after the government approved a major increase in entry permit charges, ending nearly five decades without a fee adjustment.

Beginning in July, the cost of obtaining a single-entry visa will rise from ¥3,000 to ¥15,000, while fees for multiple-entry visas will jump from ¥6,000 to ¥30,000.
Japanese authorities said the revision reflects rising administrative costs, inflation, and the weakening yen. The previous visa fee structure had remained largely unchanged since 1978 despite major shifts in the global economy.
Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the government does not expect the increase to immediately affect inbound tourism, noting that demand for travel to Japan remains strong.
Officials also said the new rates will bring Japan’s visa charges closer to those imposed by other Group of Seven (G7) nations, many of which already maintain higher application fees.
The policy change comes as Japan continues to welcome growing numbers of international visitors while seeking to modernize its immigration and border management systems.
