Harry Kane Wins 2026 Ballon d’Or, Ends 25-Year Wait for England
England captain Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, becoming the first Englishman since Michael Owen in 2001 to claim football’s prestigious individual award.

The Bayern Munich striker beat Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi to the honour following an outstanding season for club and country.
Kane scored 73 goals in 65 appearances during the 2025-26 campaign, establishing himself as one of the most prolific forwards in world football.
His remarkable performances helped Bayern Munich secure the Bundesliga title and DFB-Pokal, while England finished third at the FIFA World Cup, their best result in 60 years.
The 33-year-old also scored six goals at the tournament, strengthening his case for the award ahead of several leading contenders.
Kane’s triumph places him among a select group of British footballers to have won the Ballon d’Or, including Stanley Matthews, Denis Law, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen.
His victory also marks a significant milestone for English football, which had gone more than two decades without producing a winner of the prestigious award.
Kane’s journey to football’s highest individual honour followed years of consistent performances, beginning with his development at Tottenham Hotspur before he established himself as one of England’s leading goalscorers.
He made 435 appearances for Tottenham, scoring 280 goals before moving to Bayern Munich in 2023 in pursuit of major trophies.
Since joining the German champions, Kane has continued to deliver impressive performances, recording 158 goals in 156 matches, according to figures reported around the ceremony.
His success reflects a career built on sustained improvement, professionalism and a determination to compete with some of the greatest players in football history.
During his acceptance speech in London, Kane thanked his family, wife Kate, former coaches, Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich teammates and the England national team for supporting his career.
He also acknowledged England manager Thomas Tuchel and his coaching staff, describing the opportunity to captain the national team as an honour.
Kane paid tribute to Tottenham, where he developed through the club’s academy, saying the experience and guidance he received had helped shape his career.
Former France international Thierry Henry also praised Kane’s achievement, highlighting his determination and work ethic as important factors behind his success.
The result saw Mbappé finish second and Barcelona youngster Yamal third, while Manchester City midfielder Rodri and Lionel Messi completed the top five.
Meanwhile, Alexia Putellas won the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time, equalling the record for the most victories in the women’s category.

Kane’s victory represents the culmination of a long journey from a young Tottenham academy player to one of football’s most celebrated figures, ending England’s lengthy wait for another Ballon d’Or winner.
