FIFA Hands England–Argentina World Cup Semi-Final to American Referee Ismail Elfath
FIFA has named American referee Ismail Elfath as the match official for Wednesday’s blockbuster 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina, one of the tournament’s most eagerly anticipated fixtures.

The announcement was made on Tuesday through FIFA’s official channels, confirming that Elfath will take charge of the clash at Atlanta Stadium on July 15, with kick-off set for 3:00 p.m. EDT.
Joining him on the officiating team are fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, who will serve as assistant referees.
Italy’s Maurizio Mariani has been appointed fourth official, while compatriot Daniele Bindoni will act as reserve assistant referee.
Elfath’s selection reflects FIFA’s confidence in one of its most experienced officials. The seasoned referee has officiated at several major international tournaments, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and is widely respected for handling high-pressure matches.

The semi-final promises another chapter in one of football’s greatest rivalries. Defending champions Argentina, inspired by captain Lionel Messi, are chasing a place in a second successive World Cup final, while England are looking to reach their first final since lifting the trophy on home soil in 1966.
Argentina earned their place in the last four after overcoming Cape Verde 3-2 in the Round of 32, edging Egypt by the same scoreline in the Round of 16, and defeating Switzerland 3-1 in the quarter-finals.
England also impressed throughout the knockout stages, eliminating DR Congo 2-1, defeating Mexico 3-2, and beating Norway 2-1 to secure a semi-final berth.
The fixture also revives memories of the nations’ historic encounters, particularly their unforgettable 1986 World Cup quarter-final in Mexico, where Diego Maradona scored both the controversial “Hand of God” goal and the celebrated “Goal of the Century” in Argentina’s 2-1 victory.

The winner of Wednesday’s showdown will secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, while the defeated side will compete in the third-place playoff.
