2027: Kwankwaso Promises New Approach to Fuel Subsidy

Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has said the party would introduce a new form of fuel subsidy if elected in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, Kwankwaso criticised the removal of the petrol subsidy and said his party would explore other ways of reducing fuel costs without returning to the previous system.

He said the NDC would also prioritise the construction of more refineries, arguing that increased local refining could help bring down petrol prices. “We’re bringing back fuel subsidy in our own way. There are so many ways to do that,” he said.

Kwankwaso’s position comes days after President Bola Tinubu ruled out returning to the former petrol subsidy regime and pointed instead to CNG and electric transport as ways of reducing transportation costs.
