When poets say that history is a cyclic poem written by time upon the memories of man, they actually mean that history is a continuous and cyclical narrative that is written and rewritten over time.

The phrase “cyclic poem” equally goes means that history is a rhythmic and repetitive process, with events and themes echoing and repeating themselves throughout human experience.

On this day in 1792, the Hope Diamond was stolen along with other French crown jewels when six men broke into the house where they were stored.

Still on this day in 1897, obviously after months of pursuit, generals of Menelik II of Ethiopia capture Gaki Sherocho, the last king of the Kaffa.

Again, on this day in 1971 the Egyptian Constitution became official.

According to Today in History, it’s on this day in 1995 that the first game of the PCA World Chess Championship 1995, pitting incumbent champion Garry Kasparov against challenger Viswanathan Anand, took place on the 107th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower in New York City.

Remarkably on this day in 1997, NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor reached Mars.

Regrettably in 2001, on this ill-fated day, the September 11 attacks, a series of coordinated terrorist attacks killing 2,977 people using four aircraft hijacked by 19 members of al-Qaeda. Two aircraft crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, a third crashed into The Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia, and a fourth into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Today in history also has it that it was on this day in 2007 that Russia tested the largest conventional weapon ever, the Father of All Bombs.

Again, in 2011, a dedication ceremony was held at the United States National September 11 Memorial on the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in New York City, and the memorial opened to family members.

Sadly on this day in 2023, the Libyan city of Derna experiences catastrophic floods after Storm Daniel causes two dams to collapse, killing thousands of people.

Amazingly, today is the birthday of Benson Andrew Idahosa (11 September 1938 – 12 March 1998). He was a Charismatic Pentecostal preacher. He founded the Church of God Mission International. Archbishop Benson Idahosa was popularly referred to as the father of Pentecostalism in Nigeria.

For the records, Idahosa was the founder of Benson Idahosa University (BIU) in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. His only son, Bishop F.E.B. Idahosa, is now the president of BIU, founder and president of Big Ben’s Children Hospital, and vice-president of All Nations for Christ Bible Institute International, among other positions.
