Stop Calling Pete Edochie the “Father” of Nigerian Acting—He Isn’t
The internet is currently on fire with a raging debate over who wears the ultimate crown as the greatest Nollywood actor of all time, and frankly, I cannot sit back and let this trending storm pass without taking a massive, calculated bite.
Everyone is screaming one name: Chief Pete Edochie. No one is trying to water down his monolithic legacy. The man is a living cultural monument, a titan whose booming voice and unmatched delivery defined the golden age of Nollywood. But history is built on cold, hard facts, not just modern nostalgia. When fans blindly crown him the “father” of Nigerian acting, they are completely erasing the true architects of the craft.
Enter Madam Grace Owoola Oyin-Adejobi, popularly known as Iya Osogbo. Born in August 1930, she is Nigeria’s oldest living actress. She stepped onto the stage in 1953 decades before the word “Nollywood” was even conceived.
But if we are talking about the ultimate modern-day father of Nigerian theater and cinema, the crown belongs to one man: Chief Hubert Ogunde.
Consider this reality check: by 1947, the exact year Pete Edochie was born, Hubert Ogunde had already written, produced, and staged 16 professional theatrical productions. He didn’t just act; he commercialized the craft. He took drama out of church halls, turned it into a ticket-selling profession, and founded the nation’s first contemporary professional theater company. Long before celluloid or VHS tapes, Ogunde was setting the blueprint.
Edochie is an absolute king of the screen, but Ogunde built the palace. For the Internet keyboard warriors, please check the facts, before Pete Edochie, there was Iya Osogbo and Hubert Ogunde. Let’s fix the timeline.
Let’s respect the timeline, look at the facts, and give the ultimate pioneer his flowers.
