Nollywood Mourns Francis Duru as Veteran Actor Dies at 57
Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 after a brief illness, leaving colleagues, fans and the Nigerian film industry mourning the veteran performer.

His family announced his death in a statement posted on his official Instagram page early Friday, October 23, 2026.
The family expressed gratitude to fans and well-wishers for their prayers, love and support during the difficult period.
They also prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
Duru’s death comes months after the actor dismissed reports that he was battling a life-threatening illness.
In June, a video showing him looking frail circulated on social media, raising concerns among fans and colleagues about his health.
The actor subsequently addressed the reports in a video shared on his Instagram page, describing the footage as fabricated and malicious.
Francis Duru’s Early Life and Acting Career
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru spent his early years in the country before moving to Nigeria for his university education.
He gained admission to the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.
His journey in the Nigerian film industry began in 1989 when he appeared in Missing Mark, a film directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko.
However, his breakthrough came in 1995 after he featured in Rattlesnake, an action-comedy produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.
Duru played the character Ahanna in the film, a role that helped bring him wider recognition among Nigerian movie audiences.
Over the years, he established himself as a familiar face in Nollywood, earning recognition for his performances and contributions to the industry.
Awards and Recognition
Throughout his career, Duru received several awards and honours for his work in film.
In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) category at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
He was also named a United Nations ambassador of peace in recognition of his influence, particularly among young people.
His career spanned several decades, during which he remained part of Nigeria’s evolving film industry.
Francis Duru’s Family
Duru married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003, and their union produced four children.
The family suffered a painful loss in August 2024 when one of their children, Ifeanyi, died.
