For years, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire ranked among Nigeria’s most beloved television programmes, leaving many viewers wondering why it vanished from the airwaves despite its huge following. That lingering question may have finally been answered.
Im a video from his appearance on the KK Show, veteran television host Frank Edoho explained that the programme’s exit had little to do with its popularity.
Instead, he said the decision followed the withdrawal of its longtime sponsor after the company was reportedly slammed with a hefty fine by the Federal Government.
According to Edoho, the sponsor had supported the quiz show for about a decade before the financial setback made it impossible to continue funding the production.
He said the company later informed the producers that it could no longer sustain its sponsorship because it had to pay what he described as an enormous sum to the Federal Government.
“The sponsor stayed with us for a decade. Then the Federal Government imposed a fine on them over an industry-related issue. That affected the sponsorship of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
They told us they couldn’t continue because they had to pay an incredible amount of money to the government,” Edoho said in the video.
Although he did not disclose the identity of the sponsor or provide further details about the penalty, his remarks have shed new light on the circumstances that brought one of Nigeria’s most successful television quiz shows to an unexpected end.
