INEC’s 2027 Disclosure Reignites Controversy Over Tinubu’s Academic Records

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reignited public debate over President Bola Tinubu’s academic records after publishing his nomination documents for the 2027 presidential election.

The documents, released in line with the commission’s election timetable, show that the President listed only his Bachelor of Science degree from Chicago State University in the educational qualifications section of his EC9 form, leaving the spaces for his primary and secondary school qualifications blank.

Copies of his university degree certificate and National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate were, however, attached to the submission.

The publication has revived an issue that dominated legal disputes after the 2023 presidential election, with opposition figures questioning the omission and calling for clarification, while others argue that the courts have already settled the matter and that attention should shift to the credibility of the 2027 electoral process.

According to the nomination papers, Tinubu stated that he was born on March 29, 1952, in Lagos and identified his occupation as a politician.

He also outlined his career history, indicating that he worked at Mobil Nigeria Limited between 1983 and 1992 before serving as Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007.

He listed the Federal Government as his current employer from 2023 to date and declared that he had never been dismissed from public service.

Reacting to the publication, the National Publicity Secretary of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Osa Director, said the Presidency should explain why the earlier educational qualifications were not included in the documents submitted to INEC.

He argued that while the omission had generated public interest, the responsibility for explaining it rests with the President and his aides.

He also questioned why INEC accepted the nomination papers despite the blank sections relating to primary and secondary education.

The spokesman for the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Habibu Muhammed, also described the concerns as legitimate, saying Nigerians have every right to seek clarity on the educational qualifications of anyone seeking the country’s highest office.

According to him, although the issue featured prominently during the 2023 election cycle, a clear legal interpretation capable of ending recurring public speculation would be beneficial to the country’s democracy.

Offering a different perspective, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, maintained that the matter should be considered within the framework of existing law rather than public sentiment.

He noted that the President’s university degree meets the legal requirements as interpreted by the courts, adding that the issue had already been litigated up to the Supreme Court following the last presidential election.

While acknowledging that a university degree ordinarily presupposes earlier educational qualifications, he argued that the debate has become more of a moral question than one affecting Tinubu’s constitutional eligibility.

He urged political parties to concentrate on strengthening public confidence in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.

Similarly, the National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Major Agbo, said anyone dissatisfied with the President’s declaration should seek judicial interpretation instead of debating the issue in the court of public opinion.

According to him, the law provides the minimum educational qualification required for elective office, and those who believe there has been a breach should pursue legal remedies rather than rely on political arguments.

However, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Yunusa Tanko, insisted that the controversy remains unresolved, arguing that questions surrounding the President’s academic records would continue until there is, in his view, satisfactory proof addressing the concerns.

The debate gathered fresh momentum after African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Dino Melaye alleged on his X account that Tinubu did not submit his primary and secondary school certificates to INEC, questioning how he gained admission into a foreign university without those qualifications.

President Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is seeking re-election in the 2027 presidential poll.

Questions surrounding his academic records formed part of the legal challenges that followed the 2023 presidential election.

Although those cases were ultimately resolved by the courts, INEC’s latest publication of the President’s nomination documents has once again placed the issue at the centre of political discourse, with stakeholders divided over whether it presents a legal concern or simply a moral and political debate.
