R. Kelly Launches New Bid to Regain Freedom
R&B singer R. Kelly has launched a fresh effort to secure his release from prison by filing a formal request seeking to reduce the 31-year sentence he is currently serving.

Court records made public by the US Department of Justice show that Kelly, whose full name is Robert Sylvester Kelly, has applied for executive clemency.
The request is for a commutation of his sentence, meaning he is asking for his prison term to be shortened rather than wiped out completely.
Kelly was convicted in separate federal cases involving racketeering, sex trafficking, child exploitation and child abuse images.

In 2021, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison after prosecutors proved he led a criminal enterprise that recruited women and underage girls for sexual exploitation.
A year later, he received another 20-year sentence after being found guilty on child abuse image and child enticement charges.

Most of the second sentence runs concurrently with the first, leaving him with a total prison term of 31 years.
The 59-year-old is currently serving his sentence at a federal prison in North Carolina and is not expected to be released until January 2046 under his current prison term.
His attorney, Beau Brindley, has been pushing for his release for more than a year. In 2025, the lawyer filed an emergency motion seeking Kelly’s transfer to home detention, alleging that the singer’s life was in danger while in federal custody.

The newly disclosed court records indicate that Kelly’s clemency application is still pending, with no decision yet announced on whether his request will be granted.
