85 Years of Greatness: Olu Jacobs’ Remarkable Journey
Legendary Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu “Olu” Jacobs is celebrating his 85th birthday today, July 11.

Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs is one of Africa’s most respected and accomplished actors. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he has appeared in numerous British television productions, international films, and Nollywood classics, earning admiration for his outstanding performances.

Widely regarded as a cultural icon, Jacobs is often ranked among the greatest African actors of all time alongside legends such as Pete Edochie, Justus Esiri, Enebeli Elebuwa, and Sam Loco Efe. Fondly known as “Uncle Olu”, he has inspired generations of actors and filmmakers across the continent.

Jacobs studied acting at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London after his passion for the profession was sparked by the annual performances of legendary theatre pioneer Hubert Ogunde in Kano. He later built a successful international career, performing with theatre companies in Britain and starring in several acclaimed productions.

His remarkable talent and mastery of acting have earned him widespread praise, with many describing him as one of Nollywood’s finest actors and one of the industry’s greatest role interpreters.

In recognition of his contributions to the film industry, Jacobs won the African Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007. He also received the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) and the AMAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.

Olu Jacobs is married to veteran actress Joke Silva. Together, they founded the Lufodo Group, a media company involved in film production, distribution, and the training of young actors through the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.
