18-Year-Old Breaks 306-Year Record to Become World’s Youngest Professor
An 18-year-old American academic, Nathan Thomas, has entered the history books after becoming the world’s youngest professor, breaking a record that had stood unchallenged for more than 300 years.
According to Guinness World Records, Thomas achieved the milestone at the age of 18 years and 346 days when he returned to Miami Dade College as a lecturer in August 2023 to teach COP 2270: C for Engineers, a university-level programming course.
His appointment surpassed the record set by Scottish mathematician Colin Maclaurin, who became a professor at the age of 19 more than three centuries ago.
Thomas also edged past Alia Sabur, who became the world’s youngest female professor in 2008 at 18 years and 362 days.
Although many of his students were close to his age, Thomas said the classroom was built on a shared desire to learn rather than age differences.
“Everyone is there for the same reason, which is to learn,” he said. “I focus on doing my job well and helping students succeed.”
Thomas’ academic journey began unusually early. He enrolled at Miami Dade College when he was just 10 years old before transferring to Florida International University at 14.
By his 18th birthday, he had already earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering with honours.
He said his love for mathematics developed in childhood and was strengthened by growing up in a family of engineers.
He also credited his mother with helping him see difficult concepts in a simple way, a lesson that continues to influence both his studies and teaching.
For Thomas, the greatest reward of teaching is watching students overcome challenges and finally understand ideas they once found difficult.
He said teaching has also improved his own knowledge because explaining complex concepts to others requires an even deeper understanding of the subject.
Beyond engineering, Thomas is pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Miami School of Law while continuing to teach online.
He hopes to build a career in intellectual property law with a focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Away from academics, he enjoys basketball, tennis and golf, plays classical piano and follows the Boston Celtics and New England Patriots.
He also spends his free time listening to Drake, electronic dance music and house music.
Reflecting on his achievement, Thomas encouraged young people not to compare their journeys with those of others.
According to him, every person’s path is different, and lasting success comes from remaining focused, working consistently and allowing progress to unfold at its own pace.
