Neuer Retires as Germany’s World Cup Ends in Heartbreak
The 40-year-old confirmed that Monday’s defeat was his final appearance for the national team, bringing the curtain down on an illustrious international career that saw him earn 128 caps and establish himself as one of Germany’s greatest goalkeepers.

“It’s extremely bitter for it to end like this,” Neuer said after the match.
Germany were eliminated after a 1-1 draw with Paraguay before losing 4-3 in a penalty shootout.
Neuer kept his side in contention by saving one penalty, but Germany’s hopes faded when Jonathan Tah fired his spot kick over the bar before José Canale converted the decisive penalty to send Paraguay through.
The defeat also marked the end of Neuer’s unexpected return to international football. He had retired after UEFA Euro 2024 but reversed that decision to help Germany at the World Cup.

His recall sparked debate after Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann preferred the veteran ahead of Oliver Baumann, who had been the country’s first-choice goalkeeper for the previous two years.
Neuer endured a difficult tournament as Germany failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their four matches, with his performances drawing criticism, particularly after the group-stage defeat to Ecuador national football team.

Despite the disappointing finish, Neuer leaves the international stage as one of football’s most influential goalkeepers, having redefined the role with his sweeping style, leadership and exceptional ability with the ball at his feet
