Former President Sentenced to 25 Years for War Crimes

Former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of war crimes linked to the 1998-99 Kosovo conflict.

The 58-year-old Thaci and three other former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders were found guilty of illegal and arbitrary detention, cruel treatment, torture and murder.

Judge Charles Smith said the former KLA commanders were involved in what he described as a “common criminal purpose”, involving the arbitrary detention of at least 385 people at locations in Kosovo and northern Albania controlled by the KLA.

The verdict marks a major legal development involving Thaci, who remains widely regarded as a national hero by many in Kosovo for his role in the conflict against Serbian forces.
