Egypt Fight Back as Africa’s World Cup Wins Keep Rising in 2026
Egypt delivered a comeback victory on Monday morning, defeating New Zealand 3–1 in their second Group G match at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the fourth African nation to record a win in the tournament so far.

The North African side recovered after conceding first, before turning the game around with goals from Mostafa Ziko, Mohamed Salah and Trezeguet, securing all three points at BC Place in Vancouver.
The result follows Egypt’s opening group match, where they held Belgium to a 1–1 draw, keeping their qualification hopes firmly alive as the group stage progresses.

With this victory, Egypt joins a growing list of African winners at the tournament. Ivory Coast national football team were the first from the continent to register a win after edging Ecuador 1–0, while Ghana national football team followed with a 1–0 victory over Panama.
Morocco national football team also added to Africa’s strong showing with a narrow win over Scotland, reinforcing the continent’s competitive start to the tournament.
Despite these successes, several African teams—including Senegal, Cape Verde, DR Congo, Algeria, South Africa and Tunisia, are still searching for their first victories as the group stage continues to unfold.

The tournament, FIFA World Cup 2026, continues across North America, with African teams aiming to build momentum in the coming fixtures.
