Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 23-year career with Portugal. The 41-year-old forward made 234 appearances and scored 146 goals for his country, setting all-time records in men’s international football. His major honours include the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

Ronaldo announced the decision in a social media video on Thursday, November 5, 2026, saying it was time to pass Portugal’s number seven shirt to the next generation. The announcement follows reported tensions involving Portugal’s coaching setup and a 30-day suspension imposed by the Portuguese Football Federation after he left the national team’s training camp in September.

Although his international journey has ended, Ronaldo is expected to continue playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr through June 2027. He is also pursuing the milestone of 1,000 career goals, with his tally reported at 985. His retirement closes a historic chapter in Portugal’s football history, even as his club career continues.

Cristiano Ronaldo!
