Obama Reacts as Democrats Seize Congress in Major Midterm Election Upset
Former United States President Barack Obama has reacted to the Democratic Party’s victory in the 2026 midterm elections, describing the outcome as a strong message from American voters.

Obama made the remarks on Tuesday, November 3, after Democrats secured significant victories across several states, regaining control of the US Senate from Republicans.
In a statement shared on social media, the former president said the results reflected Americans’ desire for political leadership built around cooperation, national unity and practical solutions.
“Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face,” Obama wrote.
He also commended Democratic candidates who contested elections across different regions, particularly those who secured victories in areas previously considered difficult political territories.
According to Obama, their achievements reflected shared values, dedication to public service and a willingness to place the interests of their communities above political differences.
The former president equally recognised election officials and volunteers from both parties, praising their contributions towards ensuring a smooth and credible electoral process.
Obama acknowledged that President Donald Trump’s administration still had two years remaining, urging Democrats to maximise their influence and pursue meaningful changes.
He encouraged party members to prevent further setbacks while building a stronger foundation for the country’s political future.
The statement followed an earlier Instagram video in which Obama urged Americans to participate actively in Tuesday’s elections and exercise their voting rights.
He encouraged voters to locate their polling stations and contact friends and relatives, reminding them that participation could influence America’s political direction.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump reacted to the Republican Party’s disappointing performance with a dismissive message on his Truth Social platform.
“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” Trump wrote, expressing confidence in his political popularity.
However, Trump subsequently indicated that he remained open to working with Democratic lawmakers despite the significant electoral setback suffered by his party.
Speaking with The New York Times, the president said his administration would explore opportunities for cooperation and seek common ground with Democrats.
Trump also acknowledged that the ongoing war in Iran may have contributed to Republican losses, although he maintained his decision remained justified.
“I don’t think about it. I did the right thing. I would have done it again,” he said.
In another interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump expressed optimism about working with Democrats but warned that disagreements could produce political confrontation.
He also indicated that he would exercise his presidential veto power whenever he considered it necessary.
The Democratic victories mark a significant change in Washington’s political balance, placing renewed attention on congressional relations with the White House.

With Democrats strengthening their legislative position, the coming months could test the administration’s ability to advance its priorities amid growing opposition.
