King Charles Faces Reparations Protests Ahead of Commonwealth Summit

King Charles III and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham are expected to face protests in Antigua as Caribbean activists intensify demands for slavery reparations ahead of the Commonwealth summit.

Demonstrators are preparing placards, billboards, T-shirts and public vigils calling on Britain to acknowledge its historical role in the transatlantic slave trade.

The protests will take place in St John’s, Antigua’s capital, where leaders from the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries are gathering for their next summit.

Activists insist that Britain must apologise for its involvement in the forced transportation and enslavement of millions of Africans across the Atlantic.

James Knight, of Citizens for Reparatory Justice, one of the groups organising demonstrations, said the British government’s position had made public protests necessary.

He described the refusal to offer an apology or reparations as deeply offensive, particularly because Caribbean leaders have repeatedly requested discussions on the matter.

However, Burnham appeared to soften Britain’s position in an article published on Friday, expressing willingness to consider calls for a formal apology.

The British prime minister proposed structured discussions with communities affected by slavery, adding that demands for an official apology would form an important part of the process.

Although his statement stopped short of promising reparations, campaigners may regard the willingness to engage as a significant development.

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, commonly known as CHOGM, is traditionally a gathering focused on cooperation among member nations.

However, this year’s meeting is expected to attract considerable attention over historical injustices, colonialism and demands for reparatory justice.

Activities planned by campaigners include public demonstrations, a candlelight vigil honouring enslaved Africans and the launch of a global reparations caravan.

Organisers describe the caravan as an international movement combining cultural activities, advocacy and demonstrations to strengthen demands for reparations.

For Caribbean campaigners, the summit represents another opportunity to pressure Britain into addressing the consequences of slavery and colonial rule.

The movement has received support from regional leaders who have spent more than a decade demanding acknowledgement and compensation for the suffering inflicted on African and Caribbean populations.

Hilary Beckles, chairman of the Caribbean Community Reparations Commission, described the gathering as a major opportunity to advance negotiations on reparatory justice.

Beckles, who also serves as vice-chancellor of the University of the West Indies, maintained that reparations remained central to the Caribbean’s expectations for the summit.

Although the issue is not formally listed on the summit’s agenda, Caribbean leaders are expected to raise it during private discussions.

Several organisations supporting the campaign will also hold meetings outside the official gathering to coordinate their demands.

Among the groups expected to participate are the Repair Campaign, Leigh Day law firm, Open Society Foundations, TrustAfrica and the UK’s parliamentary group for Afrikan reparations.

The renewed campaign places Britain under growing pressure to confront its historical involvement in slavery as King Charles and British officials engage with Commonwealth leaders.
