VIDEO: Sowore Turns Up at New York Protest as UNGA81 Draws Demonstrators
Nigerian activist and 2027 presidential aspirant, Omoyele Sowore, joined protesters in New York on Thursday as demonstrations were held against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Sowore, who is in the United States as the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly takes place, disclosed his participation in the demonstration in a post on his official X account on Friday.
He said he joined the protest to demand justice for Palestinians and condemn what he described as human rights abuses by the Israeli government.
“Yes, today in New York, I joined the Free Palestine protest. No justice, no peace! #FreePalestine!” Sowore wrote.
The activist also condemned what he described as genocide in Gaza, drawing attention to the worsening humanitarian situation in the territory.
“I condemn the genocide being committed by the state of Israel in Gaza,” he said.
Sowore said his participation was also intended to demonstrate support from Nigerians for the rights of Palestinians.
“I joined to make it clear that Nigerians stand for justice and human rights for Palestinians,” he added.
His appearance came as several protests took place across New York on Thursday, coinciding with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s appearance at the United Nations General Assembly.
Thousands of demonstrators gathered to demand accountability over Israel’s military operations in Gaza and call for an end to United States military support for Israel.
More than 100 people were reportedly arrested during the demonstrations.
The protests drew international attention as Netanyahu addressed the UN, with demonstrators seeking to highlight the continuing conflict and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Sowore has remained active in Nigerian political and human rights campaigns and is among the politicians seeking the presidency in the 2027 election.
