Former Super Eagles Captain Turns to Islam in Qatar

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has reportedly embraced Islam after reciting the Shahadah in Doha, Qatar.

The 33-year-old defender, who currently plays for Qatar Stars League side Al-Ahli, reportedly converted while in Doha, according to Qatari newspaper Al-Arab.

Islamic scholar Dr Muhammad Salah also shared a video on his verified Facebook page showing Troost-Ekong reciting the testimonies of faith.

Troost-Ekong began his career in the Arab region in 2024 when he joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Khaleej.

He later moved to Qatar in January 2026 after signing an 18-month contract with Al-Ahli.

Since joining the club, the Nigerian defender has made 14 appearances across all competitions, including one appearance this season.

At international level, Troost-Ekong represented Nigeria from 2015 to 2025, earning 83 caps and scoring eight goals.

He was a key member of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s best player.

The defender also represented Nigeria at the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, becoming one of the country’s most experienced defenders during his international career.

His reported conversion to Islam marks a new chapter in the life of the former Super Eagles captain, who has spent the latter part of his football career playing in the Middle East.
