Nigerian Army Raises Alarm Over Alleged ISWAP Plans to Attack Churches, Schools, NYSC Camps

The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over intelligence indicating that ISWAP and other terrorist groups may be planning coordinated attacks on churches, schools, NYSC orientation camps and other vulnerable public facilities across parts of Nigeria.

In a September 9 communication obtained by SaharaReporters, the Army said suspected terrorists had allegedly begun mobilising fighters and conducting surveillance around potential targets, particularly in the North-East, North-West, North-Central and parts of the South-West. It also reported the movement of armed fighters from Katsina through Kaduna towards Plateau State.

The military expressed particular concern about schools ahead of the 2026/2027 academic session, saying terrorists could exploit the return of large numbers of students and staff to cause mass casualties and heighten fear ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Army urged intensified surveillance and stronger security measures around identified locations and other vulnerable public facilities, warning that the intelligence suggested the alleged plans may have progressed from mere intent to preparatory activities.
