US FBI Seeks Private Court Explanation for Withholding Tinubu Records
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has asked a federal court for permission to privately explain why it is withholding some records concerning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a filing dated August 20, the agency asked the US District Court for the District of Columbia to allow it to submit a confidential declaration supporting its decision.
The records were requested under the Freedom of Information Act and relate to Tinubu between 1992 and 1993.
The FBI cited exemptions covering law enforcement investigations, investigative methods, privacy and individual safety, saying some details could not be disclosed publicly without revealing investigative techniques or putting people at risk.
The agency said it would submit the confidential explanation by August 28 if the court approves the request.
The case was brought by American businessman Aaron Greenspan, who has sought records from several US agencies concerning investigations into a Chicago heroin ring from the early 1990s.
