US Makes Surprise Move at UN Meeting
A United States delegation staged a dramatic walkout during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday after France publicly criticised Washington’s position on human rights, exposing growing diplomatic tensions between the two allies.
The protest occurred during an emergency session on the war in Ukraine as France’s Ambassador to the UN, Jérôme Bonnafont, addressed the council.
Members of the US delegation left the chamber while he was speaking in what officials later described as a deliberate act of protest.
The disagreement followed a vote at the UN General Assembly on the renewal of Volker Türk’s mandate as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
The United States opposed his reappointment, joining Russia and North Korea in voting against the extension.
Most member states, however, backed Türk’s continued tenure, with 144 countries voting in his favour.
France reacted strongly after the vote, arguing that the United States had aligned itself with governments it had long criticised on human rights issues.
In a post on X, France’s UN mission suggested Washington was no longer serving as a global example on human rights.
The remarks drew an immediate response from American officials. US Ambassador Mike Waltz defended his country’s position, accusing Türk of focusing criticism on democratic nations while failing to hold some of the world’s most repressive governments to the same standard.
Volker Türk has frequently commented on major international conflicts, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the war in Gaza, positions that have earned both support and criticism from different governments.
Explaining the walkout, US Ambassador Dan Negrea said the action was intended to register Washington’s displeasure with what he described as France’s disrespectful and patronising language toward the United States.
The latest dispute also reflects wider disagreements between President Donald Trump’s administration and the United Nations.
Since returning to office, the administration has scaled back funding for several UN agencies and withdrawn from a number of UN bodies, arguing that the organisation has become increasingly politicised.
Following the General Assembly vote, US Ambassador Jeff Bartos warned that Washington would review its future engagement with the United Nations, including its level of participation and financial contributions.
France, however, defended Türk’s record, with Ambassador Bonnafont describing him as an independent and principled defender of human rights whose work had earned the confidence of the overwhelming majority of UN member states.
The United Nations declined to comment on the diplomatic row, saying only that it expects all member states to respect decisions reached by the General Assembly.
