Trump Slams Europe, NATO for Failing to Back US During Iran Conflict
US President Donald Trump has taken aim at European nations and NATO allies for what he described as their lack of support during the recent conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Speaking alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said Washington never needed military assistance to deal with Iran but expected stronger backing from its allies.
According to the US leader, American forces achieved their objectives early in the confrontation, making outside intervention unnecessary.
Nevertheless, he said it would have been encouraging for NATO members to at least signal a willingness to help.
“We didn’t need assistance on this at all. We defeated them in literally the first week,” Trump said. “But it would have been nice if somebody said, ‘We’d like to help.’”
Trump also disclosed that the issue would be part of his private discussions with Rutte, adding that both men would review recent developments and consider the alliance’s future approach to similar situations.
The remarks are the latest in a series of criticisms by Trump, who has repeatedly argued that European allies rely heavily on the United States for security while contributing too little during major international crises.
The conflict involving Iran triggered weeks of instability across the Middle East and sent shockwaves through global markets, further heightening concerns over regional security and energy supplies.
Rutte’s visit comes less than two weeks before NATO leaders are due to gather in Ankara, Turkiye, for the alliance’s annual summit on July 7, where defence cooperation and emerging security challenges are expected to dominate discussions.

Despite expressing frustration with NATO members, Trump reserved praise for Rutte, describing him as a “great guy,” a “great leader,” and a capable secretary-general of the alliance.
