Fresh Security Concerns Emerge as Bello Turji’s Network Reportedly Expands in Eastern Sokoto

Communities in eastern Sokoto State are once again on edge following reports that the armed network linked to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has been carrying out weapons training and tactical drills in parts of Isa Local Government Area.

Local sources and security-linked accounts say the activities are taking place in several rural settlements along the Sokoto–Zamfara border, including Bingabale, Bafarawa, Bargaja and Gebe, areas long associated with repeated attacks, kidnappings and cattle rustling.

Residents say the development has deepened fear in already vulnerable communities that have endured years of insecurity and displacement. The region is widely regarded as one of Turji’s operational strongholds.

Reports circulating from security observers and local activists allege that fighters in the area have been undergoing structured training using newly acquired weapons.

Some claims suggest the presence of additional armed recruits, including individuals allegedly with links to other extremist groups, though these assertions remain unverified.

There are also claims that the group may have recently obtained new equipment, including surveillance and night-operation tools, potentially increasing their operational capability. Security agencies have not publicly confirmed these details.

A local activist, speaking on social media, further alleged that intelligence gathered from the area indicates coordination between multiple armed commanders operating across the border communities, raising concerns about possible expansion of coordinated attacks. These claims could not be independently verified.

The activist also shared footage online, which he said showed weapons in circulation among the group, though the authenticity and timing of the video have not been confirmed by authorities.

In recent months, Turji’s network has continued to be linked to violent incidents across Sokoto and Zamfara States, despite repeated military operations targeting armed groups in the region.

Security forces have previously declared sustained efforts to dismantle his network, but attacks and ambushes have persisted.

In one recent incident reported in Isa Local Government Area, armed attackers struck a rural community overnight, prompting a military response.

Troops were later targeted by an improvised explosive device during pursuit operations, resulting in casualties among security personnel.

Authorities have yet to release a full official statement on the latest allegations of renewed training activity, though security sources say intelligence reports are being assessed and monitoring operations have been intensified in affected areas.

Meanwhile, residents continue to call for stronger protection, warning that increased movement and coordination among armed groups could further destabilize already fragile communities across eastern Sokoto.
