Uruguay Face Last-Minute US Entry Delay Over Documentation Issues
Uruguay’s World Cup preparations have been thrown into uncertainty after the national team encountered unexpected problems with travel documentation just hours before their opening fixture.
The squad, who are scheduled to face Saudi Arabia in their first group match on Monday at 11pm UK time, were unable to depart as planned from Mexico due to administrative complications affecting their entry into the United States.
In a statement, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) confirmed the disruption, saying: “Due to problems beyond the control of the AUF, the departure from Mexico has been delayed. The squad is resting at the hotel. The new departure time set by FIFA is 4.15pm.”
Reports also indicate that organisers had to urgently arrange an alternative aircraft to ensure the team could continue their journey, as pressure mounts to get the squad into Florida in time for their opening match preparations.
The sudden delay has added to growing concerns around logistics and immigration processing linked to this year’s tournament, with Uruguay now racing against time to avoid any impact on their competitive readiness.
This is not the first travel-related complication of the competition, as earlier reports suggested Somalia referee Omar Artan was unable to enter the United States for officiating duties due to entry restrictions, raising further questions about administrative coordination ahead of the global tournament.
